A basic soil test will help determine fertility requirements. Most soils benefit from the addition of three to five cubic yards of decomposed manure, compost or sphagnum peat moss per 1,000 square-foot area.

High pH or basic soils are found throughout Colorado with some acid soils found mainly in mountain areas. It is difficult to decrease the pH or make the soil more acid.

Believe it or not, there are some really neat bulbs you can plant in the calcareous, basic soils of the Southwest. (Are you familiar with rain lily?) Check your local garden center for recommendations for your particular area.

Follow the instructions in the test kit to ensure accurate results. In general, vegetables thrive in a neutral pH, citrus plants prefer an acidic soil, and nut trees and berries thrive in a more basic soil.
