Bedding plants are really all plants that, irrespective of their growing habits, are used to make a temporary show.

A quick and easy way to start a garden of your own is with nursery-started annual transplants (or 'bedding plants'). Bedding plants are sold in most garden centers and nurseries, as well as in many mass merchandise outlets.

When you go shopping for annual color, or any bedding plants, try and buy from a known supplier such as a nursery or garden center. You can buy plants at the drug or grocery store these days, but the quality tends not to be as reliable.

Bedding Plants: Plants grown to almost full size and then planted out usually in summer to make colourful displays.

Bedding plants are easy to establish and give nearly instant gratification for a seasonal indulgence of colour.

Bedding plants for flowers and vegetables are available as seedlings, known as transplants. They're sold by Garden centers, nurseries and through the mail, or they can be grown in a bright window or under fluorescent gro-lights.

Bedding plants of statice are a rare find at garden centers, so plan to start seeds indoors 8 weeks before your last spring frost. Sow seeds in a container of moistened seed-starting soil and cover with an 1 / 8 in (0.5 mm) layer of soil.

Bedding plants are normally raised from seeds but some varieties, such as Surfinia petunias and the double-flowered lobelia ‘Kathleen Mallard', can only be propagated from cuttings so it is worth trying to overwinter a few cuttings of these too.

Many summer bedding plants are suitable in a sunny, balcony location. Try grandiflora petunias, graced by big, bright flowers, or compact salvias with red blossoms on strong, stocky spikes. Even a shady position still provides a multitude of choices.

Vegetables, bedding plants, and perennials are usually small when planted and have comparatively shallow roots. These plants may have to be watered more often to ensure a consistent water supply.

Selecting Bedding Plants
Basil is so popular that you can readily purchase plants at garden centers or nurseries in addition to growing it from seed. The plants may be sold in individual pots, six-packs or flats. Look for young, compact plants.

Growing Advice: common bedding plants. If growing from seed, sow 10 to 12 weeks before the typical last-frost date in your area. Space seedlings about 6 to 12 inches apart. Spreading varieties such as Wave should be placed 18 to 24 inches apart.
