Research examining sustained turf pesticide use over time shows increases in the number of pests because beneficial predators and competing microorganisms are killed. Pest resistance to the chemicals also has developed.

Some are pollinators, some break down organic matter, and some are beneficial predators that feed on the real enemies. You want to be able to identify your friends and foes, and then encourage the friends and frustrate the foes.

Spiders
All spiders are beneficial predators. You should encourage them into your garden by using a straw mulch.
Spined Soldier Bugs
These bugs eat the Larvae of Colorado Potato Beetles, Sawflies, Cabbage Loopers and Tent Caterpillars.

The larvae are beneficial predators that control grasshoppers. If damage is slight, tolerate adults for the short time they feed. If damage is severe, apply a commercial insecticide registered for use on clematis according to package directions.

The most common tunnelers are hunting wasps that, for the most part, are beneficial predators. These small, harmless wasps nest in the rose piths but do not injure the plants.

Pests are a normal part of every garden. They come and go with the seasons without really causing too much drama. In healthy gardens, they are kept in check by birds, frogs and lizards as well as beneficial predatory and parasitic insects.

Some insects will starve rather than eat plants treated with neem. If it is ingested, neem can disrupt insects' molting and reproductive cycles. It is non-toxic to birds, mammals and beneficial predators like ladybugs, spiders, bees and wasps.

Their larvae look like miniature alligators, and they live up to their appearance by being voracious predators of many garden pests. That's why ladybugs are among the most visible and best known beneficial predatory insects.
