Cool-climate grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryes, bentgrass, and fescues), grow best in northern climates. They get off to an early start in spring and stay green longer into the fall.

On closely mowed turfgrass, such as bentgrass golf greens, the characteristic symptoms of dollar spot are small, circular, straw-colored, sunken spots that rarely exceed 2-3 inches in diameter.

Bentgrass is also attacked but this turf is rarely used in lawns. Bluegrass lawns with 50 percent or more ryegrass and/or fine fescue are the most likely to be attacked.

Others, like zoysia, bentgrasses, buffalograss and Kentucky bluegrass, are fine-textured, with narrow blades ΒΌ of an inch wide or less. Coarse grasses will give you a rough-textured lawn, while fine grasses have a softer, even-textured look.

Ryegrass, bluegrass, bentgrass and fescue lawns should generally be aerated in the fall. Bermuda, Bahia, St. Augustine and other warm climate grasses should be aerated in the late spring.

For cool-season grasses (most shade tolerant first) - Fine fescue; Bentgrass; Rough bluegrass; shade tolerant cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass; Tall fescue; Perennial ryegrass; and non-shade tolerant cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass.

Bentgrass, Bermuda, Kentucky bluegrass, and tall fescue need 3 to 6 pounds. Use the upper end of the range in warmer climates that have longer growing seasons, and less in cooler climates with shorter growing seasons.
