Organic fertilizers start as biodegradable plant or animal material. There are many choices for organic fertilizers. Compost acts both as a fertilizer and a mulch that slows evaporation from soil.

Leave no paper trail behind with an ecard, or go for a biodegradable or recycled paper card. Give your Valentine the personal touch and make one from left over wrapping paper, wallpaper or textiles.

The biodegradable, all-natural food product gives plants a bad taste and smell, but will not harm humans, pets or animals. For use on agricultural, as well as horticultural crops, it's EPA-registered for use on edible plants.

This product comes recommended by the National Home Gardening Club, and is also safe to use around children and biodegradable.

Some people add newspaper and biodegradable materials like recyclable paper and cardboard to the compost as well. There are even special substances that can be bought at a home and garden store to speed up the compost process.

Grapefruit rinds can serve as nutrient rich, biodegradable pots. After eating, clean out the interior of the rind, cut slits in the bottom for drainage, fill with soil, and add seeds or seedlings.
