Biological pest control
A means by which a selected natural mechanism (eg, parasitism, predation, disease) is used to control pests. Has the advantage of minimising the legal, health and environmental hazards associated with chemical control.

Of the biological pest controls which can be used successfully out in the open
garden, the microscopic nematode worms which attack weevil larvae and those that
prey on slugs are the most effective.

For gardeners, beneficial nematodes are attractive as biological pesticides because of their effectiveness and environmental safety. They contain no toxins and are harmless to humans and all other warm-blooded animals.

One of the best known biological pest controls is the bacteria, Bacillus thuringiensis, available under several trade names. It is excellent for control of cabbage worms.

Before you try any natural or biological pest control products, take the time to properly identify the pest and use the appropriate product—at the right stage of the pest's life cycle to make a difference.
