Of course, we need to know some plant reproduction basics first: Some plants produce 'perfect flowers' (also called bisexual) that are self-pollinating.
The flowers can occur in both unisexual and bisexual on the same plant. Those of the male plants are somewhat larger than those of the female plants. Hoptree flowers appear before the leaves.
However look out for a 'Southern Red', it's a modern bisexual pawpaw, which means only needing one plant for crops. These plants are prolific and like freely draining, compost rich soil and a little food, but not too much.
Polygamous plants bear staminate, pistillate, and hermaphroditic (bisexual - both sexes present and functional in the same flower) flowers on the same plant. An example is Acer rubrum (red maple).
