Blackspot
Plants affected: Roses.
Symptoms: From mid-summer onwards, irregular rounded black patches appear on rose leaves.

BLACKSPOT -- Blackspot is most prevalent when days are warm and nights are warm and humid, and/or when rose leaves are wet for more than eight hours. Blackspot spores do not live in or on the soil but can remain viable on fallen diseased leaves.

Rose Disease 3 - Blackspot
The disease appears as circular black spots on the plant's leaves ranging in diameter from 1/16 to 1/2 inch. Left untreated, blackspot will destroy your plant's foliage. Hybrid tea roses are resistant to blackspot.

Blackspot is a fungal disease and the primary problem that weakens roses. In arid climates blackspot is uncommon, but wherever nights are humid you can expect to see black spots appear on the leaves, which eventually wither and fall.

Feed roses well - particularly sulphate of potash will keep blackspot at bay but avoid watering foliage too much as it can lead to fungal attacks.

Although many hardy roses are quite disease resistant, you can minimize fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and blackspot if you water only at the base of the plants or wet their foliage early enough in the day so it dries by nightfall.

"Many of the common problems like fungal disease, blackspot and powdery mildew are all caused by drought. By properly locating the rose, giving it good air circulation and properly spacing it, you can avoid problems," Schulman says.

Preventing Plant Diseases ...

This is sprayed on the leaves leaving an oily film which has the beneficial side-effect of repelling blackspot fungus. A high potash fertiliser is also used near to Cup time to help manipulate the time of flowering.
