First off, to avoid skinned knuckles throughout this project: Wear heavy leather work gloves.

blade -- Any broad and flattened region of a plant or alga, which allows for increased photosynthetic surface area.
bract -- Any reduced leaf-like structure associated with a cone or flower.

Blade - The flat part of a leaf or leaflet, characteristic of broadleaf trees.
Bract - A modified leaf that bears a flower.
Broadleaf - A tree with leaves that are flat and thin, and generally shed annually.

BLADE -- The expanded part of a leaf or petal.
BLEEDING -- The loss of sap from plant tissues which have been cut.
BLIND -- The loss of the growing point, resulting in stoppage of growth. Also, failure to produce flowers or fruit.

Bloom A waxy coating sometimes found on stems, leaves, flowers and fruits.

Blade Type
There are three types of blades that most garden tillers tend to utilize; bolo, pick/chisel and slasher.

blade The flattened part of a leaf.
blanch To exclude light from plants or parts of plants to render them white or tender. Often done to cauliflower, endive, celery, and leeks.

Ample blade openings. A ¾-inch opening in the blade is enough to allow lots of small branches to be cut at once. Smaller blade openings do finer, slower work.

Trimmer Blades
Keep trimming blades sharp at all times. Blades that are not sharp will gnaw, mash, split, and tear the branches of your hedge. This is unhealthy for your hedges and may increase chances for disease.

Blade sharpeners start at about $15.
Besides a good blade, you'll want to look for a comfortable handle. Foam cushioned handles can ease grip stress, but wooden handles, when maintained, will last longer.

BLEEDING: The loss of sap from plant tissues which have been cut. Pruning when the plant is not dormant.

A blade is usually fastened onto the lawn mower with a large bolt. If it needs tightened, use a torque wrench for the job. Make sure that the blade is secured properly.

The blades need to be changed regularly, undo the central bolt to remove them. The curve of the blade needs to face upwards because it acts to make the grass stand up so that the blade can cut it more effectively.

The blades of cutting tools should be sharpened at least once a year. You can sharpen the blades yourself by running a Carborundum stone or file along the beveled side of the blade.

Leaf blades are 2 to 3 feet long and a deep, shiny green. Loose, feathery flowers atop 5-foot stems appear in June and are initially light pink in color.

Keep blades on cutting tools sharpened. Keep handles clean of water, dirt and oil.
Never work alone - always be able to contact someone quickly for help in case it is needed.

Tall blades and plumes of ornamental grasses look great in the off-season, thanks to their unique shapes and heights. Select grasses suited for your area that are not invasive. Look for ones with good winter foliage and eye-catching seed heads.

Longer blades make smooth cutting easier on larger surfaces. A 16- to 20-inch blade is generally sufficient. The tradeoff is ease of use and lighter machine weight.

Broken blades should be removed and a rake run through the blades will pull out the old dead foliage. Be careful and wear gloves as the plant's leaves are sharp.
Fertilize the grass annually in spring with an all-purpose plant food.

Sharpen blades of tools, such as pruners (figure F), hedge trimmers and shovels.

To sharpen blades of knives and secateurs, use a fine sharpening stone from a garden centre or hardware store.
First, prepare it with a few drops of general-purpose lubricating oil.

Remove the blades from the shears. How to do so will vary depending on your model of sheet metal cutting shears. All models use mounting bolts to secure the blades in place. Use a hex key of the appropriate size to remove the bolts.

Sharpen the Blade of a Lawn Mower
Sharpening the blade of a lawn mower is an important part of maintenance, get expert.

2. Set mower blades high, about 2½ - 3 inches (except very last mowing in fall). Mowing grass too short severely stresses it by removing too much moisture and nutrients. Longer grass will also do a better job of shading out weeds.

Hand-pulling blades of grass 'twixt thumb and forefinger, along with the occasional Ajuga plant, could be considered tedious work, but compared with the frantic pace my usual chores demand, it was an exercise in meditation.

A good sharp knife (razor sharp, with a thin blade) is important for making the cuts and the cutting should be done with a slicing motion rather than trying to drag the knife through the wood.
