Englishman Henry Shaw, an 18-year-old cutlery salesman, arrived in St. Louis in 1819 and amassed a fortune that allowed him to retire just 21 years later and indulge his interest in botanical gardens.

 


Botanical names have the distinct advantage of referring to one and only one plant, with certain exceptions. The use of these names makes communication between widely scattered gardeners and plants-men more precise.

Botanical Name
The international, scientific name of a plant, agreed upon by botanists to apply uniquely to a particular species, and denoting its relationship to other, similar plants.

Botanical Name - Refers to the Latin name of the plant in the biological classification system. It is almost always two words. The first is capitalized and is the name of the genus and the second is not capitalized and is the species.

Botanical Name
The Latin name of a plant is its botanical (scientific) name. Unlike common names, of which an individual plant may have many, a plant has only one correct botanical name, which it shares with no other.
