Flats and other containers can be placed in a saucer or pan of warmish water for constant bottom watering, although too much wetness encourages fungus diseases.

 


With bottom watering, let the plant soak in a saucer for up to an hour and then remove. Since they are sensitive to cold water, avoid splashing cold water on the leaves or in the crown of the plant.

The best way to keep seedlings evenly, consistently moist is with bottom watering.

Peace lilies can be sensitive to chemicals in water. Try not to get water on the leaves. Bottom watering, as with African violets, is a good choice.

Don't use saucers unless you fill them with pebbles so that the plant doesn't sit in water. You can use bottom watering, but empty the water out of the saucer after a couple of hours.

I top water my collection of over 300 plants each week. I have only lost 5 plants to crown rot in the last 8 years. Bottom watering can also cause crown and root rot by leaving the plants sit in the water.
