Bristlecone pine (Pinus aristata): Adaptable to rocky and poor soils, it prefers excellent drainage. A slow grower, this type will eventually reach up to 20 feet in height. Its appearance is so distinctive that you only need one as an accent.

Colorado Bristlecone Pine Pinus aristata-The needles of this slow-growing North American native evergreen have an attractive bluish cast. Its picturesque growth habit is reminiscent of a trained bonsai and makes this plant a natural focal point.

Use a stiff bristle brush to finish scrubbing off any fine bits of debris or dirt from gardening tools. Continue scrubbing them until they are clean.

Generally, any foliage that is sticky or secrets a sap-like substance, has hair or bristles, is feathery, or exudes a stinky smell will keep deer away.

Stains are best applied by brush for maximum penetration (natural bristle brushes for oil-based stains, synthetic brushes for water-based stains). For a uniform covering, mix the stain thoroughly before and during applications.

Pricklypears (Opuntia) have fine bristles, known as glochids, that fly off the plant with the merest disturbance. They're relentless, invading cloth and skin, and they take a good washing with hot soap and water to remove.

A cleaning pad, a hard bristle brush (not wire because it may strip the paint), and a bucket of soapy water is all that is needed. A spray hose can be used but do not spray down the engine or let the water pool around the engine.

The injury is caused by the piercing of the cell walls by the bristle-like mouthparts and the ingestion of their contents, including the chlorophyll.

Use an old knife or a special paving brush, with an angled head of wire bristles, to scrape weeds out of the gaps between paving slabs.
If you have large areas of paving that need weeding, try a gas powered flame gun.

For leaf sweeping, select a big, wide, stiff bristled broom as this will reduce the amount of effort and time required. Brooms with polypropylene brushes will last longer.

When painting with a stencil cut out use a short bristled brush and with a dabbing motion apply your paint. If using several colours have a separate brush for each colour you use.

Next, use a stiff-bristled brush and a diluted solution of bleach water to thoroughly scrub inside the planter. This brushing will remove salts and kill any germs or insect eggs hiding inside. Dishwashers are great for cleaning small planters.

When your gardening chores are finished, clean up with a hard-working nail brush and handmade lavender soap (Shepherd's Garden Seeds, $7.95), or an English brush with an extra row of bristles on top for fingernails (Langenbach, $19).

The conifer family includes both the oldest living thing on earth (Pinus aristata, or Bristlecone Pine, known to reach 4,000+ years old) and the largest (Sequoia sempervirens, or Coast Redwood, nearly 400 feet tall).

Scrub off the rust with steel wool or a wire brush with stiff bristles. Apply firm pressure and use downward brushstrokes as you scrub. Be sure to wear gloves. Remove the rusty residue with a soft cloth.

LEAFING BRUSH: This has a wide, thin row of soft bristles for picking each sheet of leaf off the pad.

Larvae: This is the white grub stage that is so familiar in lawns. Japanese beetle larvae have a V-shaped series of bristles on their raster (the underside of the tip of the abdomen.) Grubs will grow in length as they feed and mature.

With winter dieback, a 12-year-old Manchurian walnut (Juglans mandshurica) has attained a height of just 45 centimetres, and the bristlecone pine (Pinus aristata) and Ponderosa pine (P. ponderosa) looked so sorrowful that I took them out.

This plant grows in a rosette form and develops snap traps that get 1-1 1/2 inch long with sharp teeth and bristle sensor hairs inside each trap. In the spring it sends out a flower stalk with a cluster of small white flowers.

The forceps could also be used to remove fluff and other debris from impossible to reach nooks and crannies in among the spines. I currently use a stiff bristle paintbrush but sometimes that only makes matters worse.
