Bud count Number of early buds. Bud eye A potential growth point that is used for budding. Bud scale A modified leaf or stipule (there may be one, a few, or many) protective of the embryonic tissue of the bud.
Both plants can have outstanding scapes, large bud count, vigor, and good substance in their flowers. Tets in general are a bit thicker in the scape, leaves and petals, and perhaps a little coarser in appearance.
39. `Gayle Ellen'--Offers excellent branching and a bud count of seven. Heavily ruffled and fluted diamond dusted pale pink with lighter areas at deep pink beards. Midwest bred, will do well in all zones. Available from Comanche Acres Iris Gardens.
Some people will actually count the number of buds on the plant and of course, choose the one with the highest bud count. Be wary of plants that look wilted, this may indicate root rot from too much water.
