Budworm caterpillars attack buds of developing flowers. Damaged buds don't open, and lack of flowering usually is the first injury observed. Flowers that do emerge appear ragged and have a chewed appearance.

Life History
The adult stage of the tobacco budworm is a moth with a wingspan of about 1 1/2 inches. The wings are very light, with brown overtones and with a few wavy cream colored bands.

The first recorded outbreak of the spruce budworm in the United States occurred in Maine about 1807. Another outbreak followed in 1878. Since 1909 there have been waves of budworm out breaks throughout the Eastern United States and Canada.

Budworm caterpillar - Small green caterpillars that attack late June and July and feed on the flower buds. Often you won't see the actual caterpillar, but you may notice small black dropping and small holes in the leaves and buds.

Pest problems with geraniums are rare, but an insect called the geranium budworm occasionally causes extensive damage where winter temperatures seldom fall below 20°F (-7°C). The larvae of a moth, budworms hatch from eggs laid on flower buds.

The ozone in smog causes silvery spotting on leaves (petunias are so sensitive that they are good indicators of invisible ozone pollution). Tobacco budworm is a problem in some areas.

As for insects, the white pine weevil and western and eastern budworms are ones to look out for.
