Bulbous Plants: All Class
There are five broad horticultural categories of bulbous plants. Do you know what they are? Learn the flower bulb basics - from true bulb classification to rhizomes, corms and tubers.

Are bulbous in form and are also frequently an assortment of the colours violet, white colored, and/or yellowish. Typically white-colored or creamy whitened, but these days there are fantastic yellow-colored and red-skinned kinds.

Tulips, a bulbous perennial, are brightly colored flowering plants that are fairly easy to grow.

Scilla are bulbous perennial plants that is evergreen where hardy. Leaves are lance-shaped, upright and fleshy. It produces spikes of blue bell-shaped flowers in the spring.

Irises are a bulbous or rhyzomatous native to northern temperate regions all over the world. Their distinctive flowers consist of three inner petals or 'standards' nested inside three outer petals or 'falls'.

Kohlrabi is a bulbous root crop that prefers cool weather. It is a member of the cabbage family.

Snowdrops are a bulbous perennial, at home in both woodlands and rock gardens.
Leaves: 2-3 strapy, slightly inverted leaves per bulb. Since snowdrops grow in clumps, they tend to look like a single, much fuller plant.

Ovary - enlarged, bulbous, basal part of the pistil which bears the ovules (the egg-containing units which, after fertilization, become the seeds) attached either to its central axis or to its inner wall.

Hippeastrums are another one of the bulbous plants that have found a home in warm climate gardens. Like the Daylily they are very hardy and flower well in full sun, but will also flower in areas of shade.

Particularly favored by Victorian gardeners, the aptly named containers with the bulbous planter-pockets were popular for cultivating strawberries.

If you are looking for small grasses in the landscape consider bulbous oat grass, a white and green variegated plant growing 12 to 18 inches in heigh. Side oats grama, is a 2 foot tall plant with an arching growth habit, that is very drought tolerant.

Short, bulbous purple pitchers appear in early spring, radiating outward from a central clump. Sarracenias will not do well in very rich or high nitrogen soil. They do best in a mixture of peat moss and sand.

This clivia, also known as kafir lily, is a bulbous plant originally from South Africa. The trumpet-shaped blooms are usually deep orange with contrasting yellow throats, although dark red and solid yellow varieties also exist.

This disease occurs on leaves of several species of iris (including the bulbous types), narcissus, and certain other ornamentals, but is a major problem only on the commonly grown, rhizomatous species of iris, Iris germanica.

Symptom: The fruit is malformed with some scarring; parts of the fruit appears to be cinched between bulbous protrusions.

The following is a list of bulbs and bulbous plants that appear NOT affected by the toxicity released by walnut roots.

One of the earliest bloomers, in late February to early March, is the bulbous reticulata iris, Iris danfordiae. This tiny iris, four to six inches in height, bears a single yellow flower. Its falls are sprinkled with greenish-grown “freckles.

The best time to harvest is when the bulbous part is 2 to 3 inches in diameter. Large, older kohlrabi is tough and woody and may have an off flavor. The young leaves can be cooked like spinach.

The bulbous heads of allium are carried on long stems and look good in a vase. A.cristophii has huge purple heads in late spring, while A. 'Purple Sensation' has masses of rounded dark blooms on tall stems.

While delicate white amaryllis petals are just among the premature blooms one can see inside during winter, Atlanta horticulturist Arden Reed says not all bulbs -- including perennials such as bleeding hearts and bulbous begonias -- can be forced.

There are perennial mat-formers and cushion plants, dwarf bulbous plants, plants that form hummocks and slow-growing dwarf shrubs and conifers. The latter provide interest in winter and will break any tendency to flatness in a raised bed.

You may have seen these growing in your neighbors' yards, but never realized they were actually edible. These trees have dark green, glossy leaves and well formed branches, and bear a long, bulbous fruit that tastes somewhat like bananas.

Younger plants show signs of decay, and mature plants haven't grown much since you planted them. Dig one up, and you discover bulbous masses of golf-ball-size galls instead of a healthy, fibrous root system.
