Cabbage looper

There is apparently a high degree of natural control of the cabbage looper by predators and parasites. Also a polyhedral virus disease seems to be a key factor in population changes of the cabbage looper.

Cabbage Loopers - The small white moths in the gardens lay eggs that turn into cabbage loopers. Cover the plants with screening or floating row cover to prevent this.

Cabbage loopers are pale to dark green caterpillars with thin white stripes that arch into a loop when they crawl. They can be up to 1.5'' long. Adult cabbage loopers are 1.5'' brown moths with silver markings on their wings.

Cabbage loopers, leaf rollers, and aphids are the most common insects bothering flowering kale. Also, when subjected to extensive humidity and moisture, the kale becomes susceptible to a fungal disease known as downy mildew.

Cabbage loopers (the caterpillar form of a white, 1-inch-wide moth) feed on kale but aren't as destructive as they are on cabbage. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), an insecticidal bacterium, provides effective control.

Cabbage worms, cabbage loopers, harlequin bugs and aphids are the chief insect problems, but are not insurmountable ones. Pyrethrum and insecticidal soaps work well to control harlequin bugs and aphids.

Watch for cabbage loopers and other insects which can attack. They don't differentiate between the edible and the ornamental. Hold off on planting pansies until the temperatures begin to cool off.

To control the most devastating ones (imported cabbageworm, cabbage looper, harlequin bugs, and cabbage maggots), cover broccoli transplants with a lightweight row cover, such as Agrofabric Pro-10. Leave it on throughout the season.

The little green worms sound like cabbage looper (the caterpillar of a moth). There is a biological control for this but a good start would be to remove the pests by hand.

Among the most common insect problems are aphids, and cabbage loopers. Cabbage loopers are the larva stage of a moth. Use insecticides or organic repellent as needed.

Major cabbage pests include cabbage maggots, imported cabbageworms, cabbage loopers, and cutworms.

The familiar Cabbage White, which feeds on plants in the mustard family (Brassicaceae), often gets unfairly blamed for damage by the Cabbage Looper moth.

For example, Bacillus thuringiensis, or BT, the popular bacterial pesticide that controls caterpillars, doesn't distinguish between the larval form of the destructive cabbage looper and the monarch butterfly. It kills them both.

While calendulas are virtually insect free, the leaves and flower buds can be munched, beginning in spring, by small green caterpillars called cabbage loopers, which double up like inch-worms as they move.

Planting before the first frost also means that you will have to contend with cabbage loopers, which bore unsightly holes through the plant.

Let it brew for about a week. Strain out the herbs and add 2 tbsp liquid soap. Keep in a spray bottle, so it's ready when you need it. (Try a Basil Tea spray for leaf-hoppers, aphids, cabbage loopers, mites or beetles!) ...
