If you want to add some class to just about any room or porch while pampering your feathered friends, finding a decorative birdcage can be a fun and rewarding adventure.
A suet cage opens like a book for filling with nutritious, high-calorie tallow and suet, then closes and locks for hanging in trees.
Make a "cage" by surrounding the stakes with chicken wire. The cage should be taller than the top graft on the rose, and encompass at least 2/3 of the crown.

To Stake or to Cage?
If you use the above method of pruning and making sure that the soil next to the base of your tomato plants "sees" the sun then staking is better.

If you aren't growing your gooseberries in a fruit cage, cover bushes with netting during June and July to keep off birds. Ensure it's weighted down at the base to prevent blackbirds getting underneath.
If plants are set out early in the season wrap a layer of plastic around the cage and over the top for protection but leave air holes for ventilation. When watering plants top should be dry 3-4 inches below top before watering.
For skunks, a 10 inch x 10 inch x 32 inch cage trap (with a single operating door, not a two-door trap) is needed. For bait, try a can of cat food (fish type).
In regard to shaping plants into unusual shapes it is a case of using a wire cage. These can be purchased from some nurseries. The cage is shaped in the form you want. The plant is grown within the cage.
Contain them in a cage or train them to a trellis to keep fruits off the ground and make harvesting easier. Galvanized wire tomato cages are a quick and easy solution. However, they may not be large or sturdy enough to support rampant growth.

A more secure method is to plant your bulbs in a cage made of hardware cloth. The roots and stems grow through, but the rodents can't get to the bulbs. Make it easy on yourself and make a cage large enough to plant at least a dozen bulbs.
Provide shelter from chilling and drying spring winds by putting a tomato cage around the plants and wrapping with a white plastic sack or use gallon milk jugs with the bottom cut out.

- Taller varieties (including mountain bluet) may need support, because the stems have a tendency to become floppy as they grow. Stake or cage them when you transplant.
