Calcareous
A term that refers to alkaline soil, which contains calcium or calcium carbonate.
Calcicole ...

calcareous soil. Doil containing high levels of calcium carbonate.
calibrate. To standardize or correct the measuring devices on instruments; to adjust nozzles on a spray rig properly.

Calcarate Having a spur.
Calcium nitrogen A quick-acting fertilizer with about 48% calcium and 16% nitrogen.
Callus A thickened tissue that develops at the base of stem cuttings; new tissues formed in response to a wound.

Calcareous or clay soils are almost impossible to modify sufficiently for blueberries. Blueberry enthusiasts with unsuitable soils should grow plants in tubs using a potting soil high in peat moss.

Believe it or not, there are some really neat bulbs you can plant in the calcareous, basic soils of the Southwest. (Are you familiar with rain lily?) Check your local garden center for recommendations for your particular area.

A popular recommendation for high pH soils is adding sulfur to lower pH, but many of the soils in Colorado are calcareous. Calcareous soils are those that contain actual particles of calcium carbonate (limestone).
