Sometimes the calyx have a petaloid appearance (fleshy, bit and coloured sepals) that helps the flower to atract pollinators (examples: Orchids, Passion Flowers, Mussaendas).

Calyx: The calyx is formed by the sepals of a flower and describes the green parts that cover the flower bud before it opens and then remain at the base of the flower afterwards.

calyx search for term- n (Gr. kalyx, a calyx, cup) the outer covering of a flower external to the corolla, which it encloses, and consisting of a whorl of leaves, or sepals, usually of a green color and less delicate in texture than the corolla.

The calyx, made up of modified leaves called sepals, form the base of the flower. These may be green or coloured. Just above the calyx another whorl, this time of petals, forms the corolla, which is usually brightly coloured.

Symptoms: Typically, an infection on apple fruit shows up first as a slightly raised purplish area on the calyx end of the fruit. On mature fruit, the lesion is sunken and dark green or purple (photo 2-14).

By late summer, it sends up a profusion of flower spikes densely covered in soft orange tubular flowers with mauve-purple calyxes, giving the sunset hues for which the plant is named. Hummingbirds and hawkmoths relish the nectar-rich flowers.

These are tart tasting in some flowers. The white part at the base of hollyhocks (the calyx) is bitter and should also be removed. When serving flowers fresh, add them to your dish just before serving.

Some of the larvae bore into stems, buds, and fruit leaving small "pinholes" on the surface. The fruit usually is entered near calyx lobes or the stem. Larvae usually feed just below the skin.

Sepals cover and protect the other flower parts when the flower is a bud. As the blossom opens, the sepals fold back to reveal the more conspicuous petals. The collective term for all the sepals of a flower is the calyx.

The fruit is ready when it has turned red, although different varieties have different shades.
It's best to harvest the fruit in dry weather. Pick gently to avoid bruising and make sure the green stalk (calyx) remains with the fruit.
