Growing sugar cane
The best climate for the sugar-cane is that of tropical or sub-tropical regions. Although sometimes grown in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky, it cannot be depended upon as a crop farther north than Louisiana.

The raspberry cane borer damages raspberry plants from early June to late August. Females puncture two rows of holes in raspberry stem tips and lay their eggs between them.

Cane borers can be prevented by sealing the canes after pruning. Some rosarians use orange shellac, Elmer's[R] Glue or a cane sealer designed specifically for roses that's applied from a tube, like lipstick.

Cane borers are tiny caterpillar-like larvae that enter rose canes through tiny wounds and pruned stems, and then proceed to set up housekeeping. On occasion, they may enter the by actively boring into the cases.

Firm the soil over the roots and cover each cane an inch or two deeper than it was previously grown. Water some more. Cut each cane back to an 8-inch handle to give the roots a chance to get established.

If you are growing a taller plant for its strong vertical culms, the proper name for the stems of woody grasses (it becomes a "cane" once it is cut), then regular thinning and pruning will keep it looking its best.

Cane producing shrubs like forsythia, flowering quince and bridal wreath spirea should be pruned by removing older canes at the soil line. Once you are done pruning, or if not pruning, after the plant finishes flowering, fertilize.

When removing an entire cane, make the cut as flush as you can to the bud union. If you leave a stub, it can die back into the bud union allowing entry for disease and pests.
You may need to use a tree saw to get the final flush cut.
