Capillary matting
Capillary matting is a bit like felt, and is usually used in greenhouses and conservatories, where you stand pots on it. The matting sucks water from a reservoir of saved water, and the roots suck it up into the pot.

A capillary mat is a self-watering mat made of thick felt, one portion of which is laid in the bottom of a sink, the other on a drainage board adjacent to the sink.
If the air in your house is very dry, you can keep your seedlings happy by setting them on capillary matting, or in a waterproof tray filled with small stones or a humidity grid and a little water.
Capillary mats are often used in the bottom of the channels to help distribute the growing roots evenly for better aeration. Hybrid, media-based NFT systems have media-filled troughs instead of empty gutters.
