This is one of the 4 basic elements for every living being. Itīs the basic element that constitutes sugar molecules, which are broken by the cells to produce energy. Also, as a result, carbonic dioxyde (CO2) is produced.

The carbon is required for energy and the nitrogen for forming protein. The correct proportion of carbon to nitrogen is referred to as the C/N ratio. The ideal C/N ratio for compostable material should be approximately 25-30:1.
