Charcoal is most commonly made from burned wood. It is highly alkaline (high pH) and also rich in potassium salts. Colorado soils are already highly alkaline and rich in potassium.

Charcoal - Not to be confused with your charcoal briquettes, adding this fortifies your soil with potassium salts and will raise the pH significantly. It is mostly used for facilitating drainage and air circulation.

Charcoal made from hardwoods is added to cork or redwood bark potting mixes to absorb the acids from these highly acidic mediums. Charcoal, like lava, collects mineral salts so avoid it if you have hard water.

Best results were obtained with small fans that pulled air through a charcoal filter in the soil, cleaning more than foliage could alone or in combination with a "passive" pot of soil.

Add a thin layer of charcoal granules. This keeps odors from developing. Add a layer of Sphagnum Moss. This serves to keep soil from seeping into the drainage layer. Add 1/2 to 1 inch of well draining, fertile potting soil.
