Chippers and shredders for every size and type of garden (and gardener) are available. Several electric models are available that boast light weight, quiet operation, and low cost.

This year, consider renting a chipper/shredder with your neighbors and having a neighborhood mulch party. Give everyone plenty of notice so they can stockpile their trimmings, and pick a day well in advance of the onset of fall rains.

You know the stuff that comes out of the business end of a wood chipper. It's called trail chips by most folks ‘cuz that's all its good for. The bark mulch is okay because it breaks down fairly easily.

A compost tumbler and wood chipper/shredder are useful in a larger garden. A compost tumbler is a nice tool if you make your own compost. Turning the compost becomes less of a workout with the turn of a handle.

If you've got a wood chipper, grind the trunk and thick branches into chips, which you can add to your compost heap or use as mulch next spring. Or, simply place tree and stand in a corner of your yard to supply shelter for overwintering birds.

Several different models of shredders and chippers are available for sale or rental to use in shredding woody materials and leaves. It is a good idea to wear safety goggles when doing any type of shredding or chopping activity.

Mulch made from shredded leaves is also free, and can be made using a leaf chipper or lawn mower. However, leaves are not good for use in windy areas.
Compost is also free and is the best mulch for adding organic matter to soil over time.

Instead of calling someone to haul them away, consider renting a wood chipper. You can use the chips on top of newspaper or cardboard as natural-looking, weed-blocking material for your pathways or for underneath shrubs.

You can buy a chipper/shredder to shred your leaves or you can use a rotary mower. Begin by raking the leaves into a thick carpet about 6-8" deep. (If you try to mow a pile of leaves, the mower will stall.) ...

waste prior to composting. Chippers on the other hand pulverise woody material and
are best hired in rather than purchased.

If you don't have a mulching mower, you can use a wood chipper or similar machine. Shredding leaves creates mulch of a manageable consistency and texture, and it should be easier to distribute around your landscaping.

"The biggest challenge in the garden now is pruning," says Maureen. But, characteristically, that opens up the potential for a future project. "I'm going to get my own mulching/chipper machine," she says with a smile.
