This model has a side feed hopper for chipping limbs, brush and branches.
But what should you do with those branches once you've got them down? Instead of hauling them off to the landfill, consider adding all those nutrients back into your garden.

 


Microchipping and Freeze Branding
Some less commonly used types of permanent identification are electronic microchipping and freeze branding.

A chipping hoe is a handy tool for getting rid of small weeds. The Dutch or push-hoe is slightly more user-friendly as the action required to use it does not jar the neck and shoulder quite so much.

Bark chippings, leaf mould and cocoa shell are ideal. These can be applied at any time of the year, but are best after planting in the autumn or after tidying beds in spring.

If you are a Do-It-Yourself person, at some time you will probably be making concrete or breaking it up, planting trees or chopping them down and shredding or chipping them.

Apply a Layer of Slate Chippings
Plant the herbs, water them and cover the whole parterre in a layer of gravel. This will hide the landscape fabric and further help seal in moisture. Other mulching materials can be used, such as slate chippings.

Do not use limestone chippings around acid-loving plants, which will react to the presence of lime with poor growth and leaves turning yellow.

Finally cover the soil with a 1cm layer of stone chippings. These should blend with any rocks that have been used; limestone chippings with limestone, coarse gravel with sandstone and so on.

Manufacturers cite the diameter of the chipping tube as the "chipping capacity," which is fair enough because tube diameter is just slightly less than blade length. But it's a bit optimistic when it comes to hard, dry, or irregularly shaped wood.

Chipping and debarking can eliminate surviving Ips beetle larvae. High valued trees should be preventatively sprayed with either carbaryl (Sevin) or permethrin.

Plant the shrubs or plants by cutting a hole (make an X with a shovel to start and pull back enough paper and mulch to create a hole).

Stratification: An artificial process of simulating cold temperatures to aid a seed to germinate.

Wood bark chipping, black polythene, spent mushroom compost, spent hops, seaweed, shoddy (from woolen mills), sawdust, wood shavings and gravel are all other substances which can be used as mulches.

To improve the odds of these seeds germinating, scarify or nick the outer covering by rubbing with sand paper or chipping the coating with a sharp knife. I don't recommend the knife method. These seeds are hard and tiny and it's so easy to miss...
