Citrus trees must be the most popular of all the fruit trees grown in the home garden. Generally they are very easy to grow, but there are a few problems that can occur occasionally.
One of the most common is black sooty mould.

Citruses thrive in acidic soil, so fertilize three times through the growth season -- March, June and September -- with African violet fertilizer. Withhold fertilizer during winter. Take care not to overfeed, as citruses burn easily.

Citrus fruits are a simple way to add spring inspired colour, fragrance and warmth to a table. This centrepiece is a no brainer: pile lemons and limes in a large, clear glass bowl. Put it in the centre of the table.

Citrus trees are always welcome in a tropical garden and they're easy to bring inside, especially some of the dwarf varieties of lemon and orange.
Tips for overwintering tropicals ...

Add citrus rinds, onions and broccoli in small amounts to avoid attracting fruit flies or creating strong odors.
Successful worm bins provide:
Moisture.
Air.
Worm food.
Darkness.
Warm temperatures between 55 degrees and 77 degrees F.

Dwarf citrus trees won't necessarily provide any viable fruit, but their blossoms can perfume the air in your backyard for weeks in the springtime. And vines like honeysuckle and jasmine look and smell wonderful growing on lattice and on trellises.

Growing citrus plants is not all that difficult. Getting the plants to bear luscious tropical fruits is another story. Perhaps it's better to simply consider your citrus a nice houseplant that may, given the chance, produce fruit as a bonus.

Apricot, citrus and apple trees have a common enemy in the Tent Caterpillar. These caterpillars hatch when the leaves first open. Any visible "tents" can be removed easily with a broom in the evening and squashed or drowned in soapy water.

Except for citrus, few varieties of the different tropical fruits are available in Texas nurseries.

Winter is best to plant fruit trees like citrus, apple, pear, peach, plum, cherry or even persimmon. Buy them potted or bare rooted and don't forget to prepare the soil well by digging an oversize hole and back filling with plenty of compost.

In the low desert and other hot areas, feed citrus, avocado, and deciduous trees now. In cooler coastal or higher zones, wait until next month.
Late this month or early next, if desired, apply a pre-emergent weed killer to beds and borders.

Scale insects
Plants affected: Greenhouse and conservatory plants, especially those with thick, waxy or evergreen leaves. Citrus plants are a special favourite.
Symptoms: Tiny limpets clinging to stems or under leaves.

These are followed by small orange-like citrus about the size of a ping-pong ball that remains green until autumn, when it ripens to a yellow-orange color. The fruits are extremely fragrant but are not edible.

In October and November you can harvest the fruit of (non-everbearing) mandarins. Everbearing plants, such as lemons and calamondin oranges (Citrus mitis), provide fruit all the time.

peppers the Habanero is normally thought to be being among the hottest, coming in at about 150,000 to 300,000 Scoville heat units, when compared with 5,000 to 8,000 for your jalapeno. Normally yellow-orange but they may be green, reddish, or citrus.
