Sheltered by my gate, the roses clambering over the arbor, the gurgle of the frog fountain, I feel safe. Warm. Healed, in a way from the stress that dealing with difficult people can bring. Gardens are good therapy.
A clambering shrub that becomes a loosely climbing vine with age, it produces spiny, fleshy stems and elliptical, semideciduous dark green leaves. Panicles of long-lasting, lemon-scented, creamy-white flowers appear in fall.
One of the most overlooked groups of plants available to gardeners, vines are everywhere in nature, clambering up trees in the native woods, sprawling along roadsides and cascading down hillsides and creek banks.
They do it by taking cuttings of roses found clambering over old gravestones and in gardens along country back roads, rooting them in potting soil, and planting them out in their home gardens.
Diane's seed story began in 1975 when she began saving and sharing heritage seeds--those passed down through families for generations. Inspiration came in part from a morning glory vine given to her by her grandfather and still clambering up her barn.
