Clay pots: Their ability to blend with plant material and "get better with age" makes them the long time favorite of most gardeners. Clay pots tend to be heavy when filled with soil.

Even slow growing cacti eventually need to be transplanted. Choose a pot that is one size larger than the pot the cactus is currently in. Clay pots are the best choice for cacti.

Clay pots are porous and tend to draw moisture from the soil, so plants in clay pots will more easily dehydrate. But if the container is enameled, or if it is metal, glass, plastic, or other non-porous material, the container will not leach moisture.

Clay pots may suffer breakage outdoors from water seeping into the porous material, then freezing and thawing. Store clay pots in a garage or shed.

Clay pots need to be waterproofed before you add water. Spray the inside of the pot with two or three coats of a clear acrylic sealant that's safe for clay pots. Be sure to let the sealant dry between coats so you're ensured a watertight seal.

Terracotta or clay pots cannot be stored outdoors. Because they are porous and retain some moisture, they are prone to cracking outside because the moisture in them will freeze and expand several times over the course of the winter.

I live in northern Wisconsin, I would like to plant calla lily in clay pots and start them in the house in a south window ( 1 bulb per pot) Then place them outside. Is it possible?

Tuck small grasses, succulents, annuals and herbs into small, soil-filled clay pots to fashion a centerpiece. When the plants grow too big for the pots, transplant them into the garden.

You can slip flower- or herb-filled plastic or clay pots into them, but the lack of drainage holes is a serious disadvantage.

Take a 2" to 3" unglazed clay pot and cork the drainage hole in its bottom. Fill a 10" plastic pot with vermiculite. Push the clay pot down into the vermiculite. There should be a 3" wide ring of vermiculite around the clay pot.

If you choose clay pots, remember that clay is porous, which means water can be lost through the sides. Plants in clay pots should be monitored closely for moisture loss.

Clay pots will suck the moisture out of the soil and into the pot... and dry soil is a certain way to kill (or at least damage) your growing seedlings. If you're using clay pots, be sure to keep the soil well watered.

You can have the smaller cacti in water-permeable clay pots and water-tight, plastic containers as both will be suitable. If you put the cacti on a window sill the plastic containers would be best as the soil won't dry out quickly.

After you've diligently planted your new plants in plastic tubs, pans, or clay pots, packing the fertilizer- and chemical-free soil down tightly, load the container down with pea gravel to keep the soil from floating away.

Bear in mind that plants growing in clay pots dry out faster than those in plastic pots. Also, plants growing in "high" light need water more frequently those in "low" light.

If you are container gardening, then pick the right size container and ones that you like. Just because you have heard that clay pots are best, you don't really have to go with them.

Container gardeners are devoted to their craft for many reasons: Some have no land to cultivate; others just prefer to contain their gardening adventures to ceramic bowls, clay pots, and hanging baskets.

If you are using an old pot, wash it thoroughly and soak it in a 10 percent solution of chlorine bleach for 30 minutes, then rinse it well. (Clay pots should air out for a few days.) If you are using a new clay pot, ...

In the tropical north, they should be grown in raised borders or clay pots. Aloes can be propagated by seed, stem cuttings or off-sets. Many aloes grow close to the sea, so strong and salt winds are not a problem.

If you are re-using claypots, make sure to soak them for a few hours. Clay pots will absorb salts and chemicals in their pores. Soaking will help to remove the salts and any excess chemicals.

From memory and the occasional tiny peek I do seem to recall an assortment of clay pots that are usually emptied, washed and put away by this time every year prior to this one.

Plants in plastic or solid containers will have to be watered less often than plants in porous containers or clay pots. Be very careful not to keep the root system constantly soaking wet.

Four holes in a large pot are ideal. More holes can be drilled if needed. Place a piece of broken clay pot, or wire ball over the holes to keep soil in the pot from packing around the holes and reducing drainage.
