In Gratiola virginiana, late flowers can also be cleistogamous, meaning self-pollenating. These flowers are often in addition to the flowers that have already opened.

 


Cleistogamous A small, closed self-fertilized flower, usually near the ground.

(Gr. chasma, an opening, chasm, and gamos, marriage) the opening of the perianth of a flower for the purpose of fertilization; contrast with cleistogamous.chlorosis search for term- n.

The flowers that are low on the plant, referred to as cleistogamous flowers, do not open but instead produce and house seeds, allowing the plant to readily reproduce.
