Rumor has it that clematis vine is difficult to grow. Given the right location and a little know-how clematis is a relatively easy vine to grow which will reward you with a beautiful splash of color when in bloom.

About clematis
There's a clematis for every season and every colour scheme, and plenty of options for displaying the beautiful flowers.

Clematis need a cool, moist, deep root run, plenty of water and regular, balanced feeding. A little special preparation will ensure the proper environment. Dig a hole eighteen inches deep by eighteen inches wide [45cm x 45cm x 45cm].

Clematis is one of the flowering vines better adapted for Colorado. The best known flower colors are the cool shades of purple, blue, pink and white. Hotter shades of red and yellow are also available.

Clematis likes full sun, and moist, fertile, well drained soil. Space plants 24"-36" apart. The roots are shallow, and should be shaded by growing other flowers around the base of the vine.

Clematis vines are very hardy and can be cut off 12 inches above the ground if necessary to make it branch out more or to paint behind it. I chose 'Crimson Star' for its long blooming season.

Pruning Clematis
Small Flowered Species: Light pruning, enough to prevent overcrowding of shoots and to keep a good shape.
Large Flowered species (flowering in May and June): Trim back lightly after flowering.
