Salvia coccinea 'Lady in Red'
Salvia coccinea 'Lady in Red'
When I was a kid, my mother always had red salvia (Scarlet Sage) in the garden and we liked to pull the the flowers apart and eat the sweet drop of nectar inside.

That's exactly what'll happen if you try to prune the aptly named firethorn (Pyracantha coccinea). Its long, sharp thorns can be downright painful if you're trying to shape this shrub.

Coccinea/coccineus/coccineum Scarlet red or bright red.
Colchicine A toxic chemical used to double chromosome numbers in seeds.
Cold frame A low frame with clear top used to acclimatize plants to, or protect them from, cold.

Stachys coccinea `Hot Spot Coral'--A medium-sized herbaceous perennial with ovate bright green foliage and numerous spikes of coral-red flowers that last for 4 to 6 weeks beginning in late spring.

Firethorn, scarlet (Pyracantha coccinea)

Examples of perennials that are commonly grown as annuals include the more tender flowering sages (Salvia coccinea, S. patens, S. splendens, etc.), verbenas, and hyssop (Agastache spp.).

Wyatt Firethorn (Pyracantha coccinea 'Wyatti') This shrub is a vigorous grower, reaching heights of 10' to 12'. It prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Water needs are low and this is a good xeriscape plant.

Another care-free relative is coral sage (S. coccinea), which is a drought-tolerant salvia that blooms nonstop all summer, producing red, white, or coral flower spikes that are of tremendous interest to hummingbirds and honeybees.

Salvia splendens (scarlet sage), Salvia coccinea (tropical sage) and Antirrhinum majus (snapdragon) are examples.

There are several other very desirable species available in New Zealand, including Haemanthus coccinea (the Blood Lily) with red flowers, and the stunning Haemanthus katherinae, also known as Scadoxus katherinae with orange/scarlet flowers.

Jane points out a Scarlet Oak, Quercus coccinea, which was planted by Edna many years ago and still displays vibrant colours in autumn. On the whole, though, Edna was not fond of bright colour in her garden designs.

Shrubs: Rocky Mountain Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum); Skunkbush Sumac (Rhus trilobata); Scarlet Firethorn (Pyracantha coccinea); Box Honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida) ...
