Colchicine A toxic chemical used to double chromosome numbers in seeds. Cold frame A low frame with clear top used to acclimatize plants to, or protect them from, cold.
Poisonous Part: All parts of the plant contain alkaloid colchicine, which causes cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, increased blood pressure, irregular and weak pulse, and respiratory failure.
Colchicine, which is derived from the corms and seeds of the autumn crocus, is used as a gout suppressant. The key alkaloid of ipecac root (Cephaelis ipecacuanha), emetine, is used in the treatment of amebic dysentery and other protozoal infections.
