Compost activator. Comfrey is especially useful if you have lots of dry brown material and the pile is slow to heat up. Just layer the fresh comfrey leaves and stems in as you add other material to your pile.
A commercial compost activator can be added to speed up the breakdown of the materials.
How long will it take
The average compost heaps takes about three months to decompose during the summer months and longer during winter.
Compost activators range from chemical fertilizer to microorganisms that speed up the composting process. Although of questionable benefit, adding these when building the pile may help jump-start the composting process.
Then add a dusting of compost activator, limestone or leftover lawn fertilizer that does not contain a weed killer. The next 4-inch layer should be green stuff, such as fresh grass clippings or fresh prunings from trees, shrubs, weeds or whatever.
Dry dog food (Be careful about attracting vermin but makes a good compost activator for getting your pile rocking.)

Seaweed is a wonderful fertiliser, a great soil builder and an excellent compost activator. All in all, seaweed is terrific stuff for the garden. There's a long tradition of seaweed being used as a fertiliser to improve crop production.
