Using Composted Manure as Mulch

Compost and Composted Manure can be used anywhere, as long as they are relatively well composted and weed free.
The fertilizer may be in the form of composted manure or any good commercial complete plant food distributed at a rate of 3 or 4 pounds for every thousand square feet of vegetable garden.
Most herbs will grow well in soil that is a humus loam with added composted manure. In full sun or partial shade, herbs are easier to grow than most any other plant. An ideal pH is 6.5 to 7.0 which is slightly acidic.
To plant, dig a hole twice the size of the container it comes in; don't enrich the soil you use to backfill the hole unless it's almost pure sand (in which case, add compost or composted manure).
Mulch with straw and composted manure if possible to provide nutrients and retain moisture during the summer.
Remove seed stalks as they form.
When planting, mix organic fertilizer, such as composted manure, or a controlled-release fertilizer, into the soil before setting out plants.

Choose a location that receives full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunshine a day) and offers rich, well-drained soil. Dig a hole that is approximately 12-18" deep and just as wide.
Amend your soil by applying compost or composted manure. This step should not be ignored. Fertilizer is only a short term solution for immediate rescue. Building the soil organically is a must.

Water and nutrient needs are different for each plant, both which can be maximized by conditioning your soil with organic matter such as composted manures, compost, and a good layer of alfalfa mulch.
To help retain moisture, include plenty of decomposed organic matter: compost, composted manure or sphagnum peat moss. Organic matter decomposes quickly, especially during the summer.
