Home composting is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to produce fertilizer for your own organic garden.

COMPOSTING improves soil structure and moisture retention. Billions of decaying organisms (25,000 bacteria placed end to end equal one inch) feed, grow, reproduce and die, recycling garden waste into an organic fertilizer and soil conditioner.

Composting materials are divided into two types, green and brown. Green materials include green leafy plant residues like weeds, grass clippings, vegetable tops and flower clippings.

Pit composting has many advantages. For starters, it's free. There are no materials needed to contain the heap. Also, it's nearly invisible. It took me about an hour to dig the monster hole in my sandy, deep soil.

Worm composting is being seen more and more as a way to help our environment and reduce waste. The City of Oakland in California has a recycling program expressly for food waste.
