Coniferous Care. In June you can trim new growth on conifers like pines. On conifers, don't cut into brown wood, since it won't regenerate green vegetative growth.

Coniferous trees should be wired during the winter months, since they take considerably longer to become fixed in position. All trees should be protected from hot sun and heavy rain for a month after wiring.

Deciduous or Coniferous
First you'd determine if you're looking at a tree with needles - in which case that's an evergreen, or a conifer. The name itself says it all.

Alistair's field is coniferous plants, particularly those of the old Gondwanan continent. The Otway area is ideal for his arboretum, the area experiencing over 2 m of rain a year. The region has some of the world's last cool temperate tall forests.

The bagworm (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis) is a common pest of many coniferous and deciduous trees in the eastern U.S. This moth's larvae spin unsightly baglike shelters in tree canopies and can cause serious damage through defoliation.

Native to Asia, the evergreen, coniferous plum yews (Cephalotaxus) closely resemble English and Japanese yews (Taxus). They have coarse, one to two inch needles that vary in color from medium to dark glossy green.

Generally, shrubs fall into three different categories including deciduous, coniferous, and broad-leaved evergreens. Deciduous shrubs lose their leaves in the winter, and include many of the flowering shrubs.

Cutting lower branches of coniferous evergreens should be avoided unless there is disease or the branches are dead. The removal of too many lower branches will make the evergreen appear to be top heavy.

Of the columbines, one of the best is Yellow Queen Columbine, a selection of the species that grows in the coniferous forests of southern Colorado and New Mexico.

What's better is to plant very dense coniferous hedges such as Leylandii and Thuja Plicata. These have a similar effect as walls without causing any damage.

Conifers are plants that produce cones, and they may be evergreen or deciduous. Familiar coniferous evergreens include pines and spruces. Deciduous conifers include ginkgos and bald cypresses.
