Copper Deterrents
Snails and slugs cannot tolerate copper; it gives them a slight electrical shock on contact. Knowing this is great, but keep in mind that it creates a barrier only.

Copper wire, though expensive, is most suitable for wiring a bonsai-to-be such as the juniper above, because it remains soft. Galvanized iron or plastic coated wire may be used, but they tend to look rather ugly and detract from your tree.

Copper treated wood is a better alternative to CCA treated wood since copper is not nearly as toxic as arsenic. However it should be handled with gloves and a dust mask should be used when cutting it.

Copper nails inserted in trees have mixed reports attached. There are some, like my landscaper, who swear by the method, and others who say the only way it works is by allowing fungus to enter the tree.

Copper Fungicides are most effective when applied in mid-May and again in Mid-June, to control Dothistroma Needle Blight.

Use copper wire to position a branch, or to create dramatic bends or twists. Use a thickness that is suitable to the width of the branch and easy to bend. Carefully wrap the wire around the branch and bend it to the desired angle.
