Cordon
A space-saving plant (usually a fruit such as apple, pear or tomato) with its growth limited to a long unbranched stem. This can be achieved by removing all the sideshoot.

CORDON - A very interesting way to grow fruit trees. Apples and pears do well in this mode. The tree is repeatedly pruned and trained to grow as a single rope like stem. For lack of space, this is ideal.

cordon (1) A method of espaliering fruit trees, vines, etc. to horizontal, vertical, or angles wire or wooden supports so maximum surface is exposed to the sun, resulting in maximum fruit production. (2) A branch attached to such a support.

CORDON: horizontal branches of a grapevine trained along the trellis; also called the arms. The canes left after pruning which will produce fruiting shoots and new canes.

Cordon pruning is most commonly used in Texas vineyards. This system consists of leaving about seven upright spurs (one to two buds per spur) on each cordon, as shown in Figure 12. All other growth is removed.

Plant the cordon at an angle of about 45 degrees. Examine the roots of each plant and cut off any that are large or woody, to encourage new feeding roots, and thin those above the soil.

Espalier or Cordon (meaning rope)
You can grow apples as espaliers as ornamentals against walls or fences, along wires, or on lattices.

Spur pruned vines are trained to heads and cordons. The difference here is that head trained vines are pruned to a couple to several spurs close in to the main trunk of the vine.

For complex patterns, such as cordon, which use lateral growth, cut the terminals at the first cordon-about 15-18 inches from the ground. For natural designs, simply tie branches in their natural form without overlapping branches.

Pears and apples are the quintessential plants that are pruned and trained into the set patterns of espalier"palmette verriers, vertical cordons, and more -- but the practice doesn't stop with fruit trees.

Where the aim is to encourage flowers and fruit as opposed to shoot and leaf growth it is better to prune in the summer. Cordon and espalier fruit trees particularly benefit from late summer pruning.

Young fruit trees are trained to grow in shapes ranging from a single horizontal cordon to an ornate Belgian fence. Pruning encourages growth at various angles and enhances fruiting.
