Core samples-Cylinder-shaped samples of rock, ice, or other material from the center of an area drilled or cut into. The purpose of taking a core sample is to determine the composition or history of a geographic area.

Core samples (counting the rings) date the oldest tree as being nearly 5,000 years old. The oldest are in the White Mountains in California.
In 2004, Congress declared the oak (Quercus) 'America's National Tree.

Avoid aerifying a wet soil, as it is messy and leads to further compaction of the soil as well. If the soil sticks to your shoes or if the core samples you take stick to your probe, you should wait until it dries out some before starting the job.
