Cotyledon - these "seed leaves" are the primary leaves in the seed. In monocotyledons, the seed contains only one seed leaf and in dicotyledons it has two.

Usually the first seedling leaf to appear when a seed germinates. Some flowers, such as lilies will only produce one leaf, while most others will produce two.

COTYLEDON: The first leaves to appear on a seedling, containing enough nutrients to feed the seed for a short period.

3. Which cotyledon is the monocot and which is the dicot?

When the first leaves (cotyledons) appear, remove the plastic and move the container to a bright, sunny window. If you cannot provide enough light add a grow light or fluorescent shop fixture for additional light (14-16 hrs a day).

The seeds of flowering plants come in a great variety of sizes, shapes, and textures, but the embryonic plants contained within have the same basic design, with a rudimentary leaf or leaves, called cotyledons, as well as a root tip and a stem.

The group of pink, orange and white lewisias (Lewisia cotyledon) is another favorite of mine. These were named after Meriwether Lewis, of Lewis and Clark fame.

Look for at least two cotyledons (seed leaves) on each seedling plant. On germination of a cactus plant, the cotyledons are the first to break through the surface of the ground.

Hidden inside that coat is the radicle or beginning of a root, the hypocotyl or beginning of a shoot, either one or two seed leaves or cotyledons (the seed's food supply), and the epicotyl, which will become the first true leaves.

White Flower Farm will sell Lewisia cotyledon `Ashwood Strain,' which is reputedly less difficult to grow than other Lewisia species. I deal for rock gardens, it prefers cool summers and perfect drainage.

Siskiyou bitterroot or siskiyou lewisia (Lewisia cotyledon) Wonderful, succulent rosettes with a long succession of shades of pink to red-orange in late spring to early summer. Hardy to Zone 6.

The first two leaves that sprout from a seed are called the seed leaves, or cotyledons. These are not the true leaves of a plant. The seed develops these first leaves to serve as a starting food source for the young, developing plant.

These are cotyledons and the second set of leaves will have the expected shape.

Dicot - One of two main division of flowering plants (the other being monocots), characterized by having two cotyledons (seed leaves); examples include most fruiting and flowering trees, and most annual and perennial flowering plants.

The Garden Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) is generally described as a perennial forb/herb. This monocot (monocotyledon) is not native to the U.S. (United States) .

It's important to prick out as soon as the plant is ready which is usually when the first true leaves emerge (ie the second set of leaves that emerge after the seed or cotyledon leaves).

Keep the soil at room temperature. Once sprouts have grown two true leaves in addition to their cotyledons (sprouting leaves), transfer them into larger, biodegradable containers and space them two to three inches apart.
