Crocks
Broken pieces of clay pot, which are used to cover the holes in the bottom of pots. The crocks help to stop compost blocking the holes and improve drainage. Stones, coarse gravel or large fragments of polystyrene are useful alternatives.

 


Crocks: Pieces of broken earthenware pots put in the bottom of other pots to give free drainage and air circulation as well as the prevention of compost or soil blocking the drainage hole.

CROCK -- A piece of broken pot used to help drainage. Almost always referring to clay or ceramic pieces.
CROWN -- The region where shoot and root join, usually at or very near ground level.

CROCKING - Any material used in the bottom of containers to provide drainage (i.e. shells, rocks, broken pottery, Styrofoam.)
CROSS - Another name for hybrid, but used in much more common terms.

Good drainage is essential, so if there are no drainage holes, be sure to fill the bottom of the pot with clean stones or broken crockery.

Orchids need excellent drainage, so place a generous layer of broken crocks or plastic foam peanuts in the bottom of the pot. Before you use the potting mix, wet it with boiling water, allow it to cool, and drain it.

For almost all potted plants, 'crocking' is a way to promote proper drainage and also keep pests from entering.

Crock-type jars with cork lids, such as those sometimes used for specialty mustards, work well for potpourri presentation.

Prepare the new pot by covering the drainage hole with mesh or crockery shards to prevent potting soil from washing away. Next add about an inch of soil and then the plant.

Be sure and cover the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot with a broken piece of crockery or several rocks. Good drainage is a necessity. Anything can be used as a container as long as it has a hole in the bottom.

We used a large pot as recommended by the shop, we've added a few bits of crockery to cover the hole in the pot and help drainage as recommended, we added some potting compost and we water it regularly - but still the plant looks like its dying.

Beans ARE good with rosemary and sage, celery, cucumber, lettuces, and corn. Tomatoes like most of their non-onion crock pot friends: basil and oregano, eggplants, peppers, etc.

It's no surprise that you'll need a pot that holds water. Many pond pots are made of ceramic, plastic, sealed cement, porcelain or metal. Old crocks and wash tubs, plastic pots also make excellent pond pots.

One pound of chemical is mixed with one gallon of water. Wear rubber gloves when mixing chemicals. Mix chemicals outdoors. Use a five gallon plastic bucket or crock. Mix colors separately. Do not use a metal container as chemicals will corrode them.

Other tropical plants may be kept in crocks full of water in full sun and grown as houseplants. Free floating plants, such as water hyacinths, can be overwintered in a tub of water in a sunny place indoors.
