Cultivar
A plant that has evolved in cultivation and which is sufficiently different from all others to receive a unique cultivar name. Cultivar names are printed with a capital letter and in single quotation marks, e.g.

"Cultivar" is just a shortened word for "cultivated variety". It is a plant that has been specifically selected for its garden qualities.

The term cultivar (short for cultivated variety) identifies a plant variety that has been created by horticultural techniques such as cross-breeding or selection, and is perpetuated asexually to preserve its outstanding characteristics.

In botany a cultivar is indicated by using the abbreviation cv. and/or single-quoting the cultivar name. A cultivar may be ascribed to a particular species, or, if of hybrid or unknown origin, just to a genus.

Cultivar Selection-Select cultivars that will bloom before the end of September in the Twin Cities area. Later- blooming cultivars will fail to bloom before damaging or killing frosts in most years.

Cultivars are divided
If the seed has either been acquired or gathered from a reliable source, then there is
no impediment to successful propagation. For the best results the seed should be
sown as soon after it has ripened as possible.

Cultivar Selection -
No known cultivar of apple, pear, pyracantha, flowering crabapple, cotoneaster, quince, hawthorne, or rose is completely resistant to Fire Blight.

Cultivars
Wild ancestors of today's parsnips are thought to have originated in the Mediterranean region and spread throughout Europe, which is where modern parsnips were developed during the Middle Ages. Little has been done to them since then.

Cultivar
Variety strictly raised through horticultural processes, rather than in nature. Its name is not part of the Latin name. Strictly speaking, vegetable varieties should be known as cultivars.

Cultivars with resistance to powdery mildew are available for some ornamental species. Because chemical control for powdery mildew often involves season-long applications, use of resistant cultivars is highly desirable.

Cultivar: The quick answer to the question "What is a cultivar?" is to say that it's the proper term for what we usually refer to as a "variety." Now, what exactly is a variety?

Cultivars refers to varieties which, although they occurred naturally, can only be replicated by asexual propagation and human intervention by cloning.

Cultivar or cultivated variety refers to plants, occurring either naturally or in cultivation, that are not capable of reproducing true to the original plant naturally and which must be perpetuated by vegetative propagation.

A cultivar introduced this year, Mesa Verde ice plant, or Delosperma "Kelaidis" PPAF Mesa Verde, is from the Plant Select program. This plant has a wonderful salmon-pink, almost-iridescent flower.

One cultivar to try is 'John Elsley,' which has proven to be hardy. The small, dissected, dark green leaves and roots withstand drought. This cultivar usually forms a nice low mound.

The cultivar 'Forescate' has rose red flowers. 'Corsica' and 'albiflorum' have white flowers.

This cultivar is disease resistant but susceptible to slug and snail damage.

Lavandin cultivars (L. x intermedia) combine the best characteristic of English lavender and spike lavender (L. latifolia) to produce hybrid cultivars with fragrant blooms on long stems. 'Grosso' is a favorite for drying.

Resistant cultivars: Most of the major apple cultivars are susceptible to the fungus, although this varies somewhat (Table of apple cultivar susceptibility to V. inaequalis).

Most plum cultivars grown in New York, including Stanley and Damson, are susceptible to this disease.

The currant cultivars Cornet, Consort, and Crusader are resistant to white pine blister rust.

Select plant cultivars that are suited to containers. Dwarf cultivars of large vegetables are more appropriate for pots and containers than their full-size counterparts.

Hybrid
A crossbred cultivar that is not likely to breed true from seeds. Some methods of propagations such as division or cutting should produce identical copies of a hybred parent.

Give some thought for the location of your garden. Plants vary greatly in the amount of sun they can tolerate or require, and this information will help you decide what to buy.
