Cycads
Cycads are beautiful and fascinating plants for the home garden in tropical and subtropical areas. They have a wide range of leaf shapes and textures, interesting cones and seeds and cones and plants grow into different sizes and shapes.

cataphyll -- In cycads, a scale-like modified leaf which protects the developing true leaves.
columella -- A small column of tissue which runs up through the center of a spore capsule. It is present in hornworts, mosses, and some rhyniophytes.
The succulent varieties (non-cycad/palm/fern) plants are also referred to, by collectors, as 'fat plants'. Generally these are slow growing plants often collected and displayed for their unusual caudeces.
These can include ferns, hostas, bromeliads, wild ginger, bamboo, cycads, palms, begonias, bananas, and rhododendrons.
Sago palm (Cycas revoluta), is from the cycad family. It is an evergreen, drought-tolerant perennial palm that is good for containers, indoor use, and shady spots. It can get 10 to 12 feet tall with dark green leaves 4 to 5 feet long.
And there are quite a few popular palmlike plants, including the related cycad called 'sago' palm (Cycas revoluta), commonly used in landscapes from the lower Southeast to the entire West Coast and often prized as container plants elsewhere.
Sago Palm is the common name of several species of Cycad popular in mild-winter regions of southern North America.
