Damping off
Damping off is when young seedlings keel over and die from fungal attack. It occurs when drainage is poor and when seedlings are overcrowded or damaged.

Damping off is the single term used to describe underground, soil line, or crown rots of seedlings due to unknown causes. The term actually covers several soil borne diseases of plants and seed borne fungi.

Damping Off
Any of a number of fungal diseases which attack seedlings, causing the stem to wither at the soil line, collapsing the plant.

Damping off
The term used for fungal ailments, usually affecting seedlings, that cause the stem to rot off at soil level.

Damping off: A condition in seedlings caused by a fungus that attacks at the soil level, causing them to rot, wilt and die. This usually happens under moist still-air conditions.

Damping Off: The death of seedlings by either over watering or disease or a combination of both.
Dead Heading: Cutting off dead or dying flowers to encourage further blooms by preventing the setting of seeds.

Damping off
Seedlings started off so early in the year are especially vulnerable to the fungal disease damping off, which causes seedlings and young plants to collapse at soil level.

damping off
A fungus, usually affecting seedlings and causes the stem to rot off at soil level. Sterilized potting soil and careful sanitation practices usually prevent this.

Damping off: This refers to a fungal disease that attacks developing seedlings, causing them to shrivel and die right at soil level. The fungi thrive in stagnant air and high humidity.

DAMPING OFF -- Decay of young seedlings at ground level following fungal attack. Often the result of soil borne diseases and over watering.
DEAD-HEADING -- The removal of faded heads of flowers.

DAMPING OFF - This is a decayed young seedling at ground level, caused by a fungal attack. The result of soil borne diseases and over watering.
DAPPLED SHADE - High shade that is created by allowing sun to shine through.

Damping off is probably the most serious disease of annuals, causing seeds to rot and small seedlings to die. It spreads quickly and can be carried on soil, tools, and containers.

Damping Off
Fungus related condition of seedlings attacking the base of the stem, causing the seedling to collapse.

Controlling Damping Off disease. White mold is apt to form on the top of soil in cold, damp, dark weather, which will wilt seedlings and eventually kill them.

In moist climates, damping off can affect seedlings. Early thinning and good weed control reduce the problem by keeping seedlings dry and well ventilated.

Instead of fussing with grow lights, damping off potions, calendars, and dry indoor environments, the winter sower is occasionally adding a bit of water to containers that have dried out or re-anchoring lids that have started to blow off.

In the germination phase, impatiens is prone to damping off, so plant plenty of extra seeds in case this happens.

When the stems of young seedlings become withered and topple over, they have probably been killed by a soil-borne fungus called "damping off.

Use sand or vermiculite to very lightly cover seed and don't over water as they are prone to damping off. Seed should germinate after about one month.

Fan: Good ventilation helps prevent damping off and other fungal diseases prone to attack seedlings. "Plus," says Owen, "ventilation helps them breathe by circulating carbon dioxide and oxygen.

Chamomile tea sprays can help prevent damping off, a condition that causes the plant to fall over. Check the stem at soil level. If it is withered, that's "damping off." Remove the plant. Do not over water.

Wet clay soil can cause damping off and rot, and it dries into a hard-baked crust. The ideal soil is garden loam with about equal parts sand, clay, and humus, which provides nutrients for beneficial micro-organisms in the soil.

To avoid crown rot or damping off, top off the seed mix with 1/2 inch of sharp sand or vermiculite; this keeps vulnerable young sprouting stems from rotting off due to excess moisture at the soil surface.
