Deciduous and evergreen trees. Deciduous trees are trees that shed leaves and foliage at the end of the growing season, while evergreens are trees that stay green year round.

Deciduous trees. James' first choice is the oak. These tough, adaptable, virtually pest- and disease-free trees provide great shade and are also beautiful. Many oaks produce great fall color (figure A).

Deciduous or Coniferous
First you'd determine if you're looking at a tree with needles - in which case that's an evergreen, or a conifer. The name itself says it all.

Deciduous: Refers to plants that shed their leaves in autumn and then grow them again the following spring. See evergreen.
Dehiscence: Refers to fruits opening when ripe to release their seeds.

Maidenhair fern, or Atiantum palatum, features erect to arching 18 in (45.7 cm) fronds.

Pruning deciduous shrubs
Hard prune selected shrubs as new growth becomes evident. If this is not done now, these plants will become very woody in habit, with drastic reduction of foliage and flower size.

Deciduous shrub with ovate leaves and white, pink or light purple flowers. Grows best in sunny weel-drained location. It is resistant to both cold and pruning (including topiary) and transplants well.

Deciduous cinquefoil has long been used for borders and ground covers in cold-climate gardens. It grows into a 1-1/2- to 2-foot-tall, 3-foot-diameter mound that flowers continuously from early summer to frost.

This deciduous shrub is a showstopper in a shaded woodland garden. This plant offers something new in each season-in spring the leaves emerge and are followed by summer blooms.

If a deciduous tree is placed in a planting bed, the bed needs to extend only about two to four feet beyond the trunk. That protects the tree from lawn mowers and creates an interesting transition area between the tree and the lawn.

These deciduous vines spread by attaching themselves with aerial roots and holdfasts. The aerial roots grip rough surfaces, such as tree bark or trellises, and weave across the entire surface.

Small deciduous shrubs (such as the colorful border barberries, compact spires, and shrubby potentillas) may lack leaves in winter, but their densely twiggy structure holds power even when bare.

Choose deciduous trees and shrubs for interest in every season: not just for flowers and foliage, but for fragrance, interesting bark, fruit that persists through winter, and stems and branches that gracefully trace the sky.

Replace deciduous trees and high maintenance plants (roses, for example) with architectural plants such as bamboo, cordylines and phormiums.

Hydrangeas are deciduous shrubs that transform from bare winter stalks into lush, green branches dripping with blooms in summer. Hydrangeas make a great addition to landscape borders, and the blossoms are gorgeous as cut or dried flowers.

Evergreen plants have foliage that remains functional through more than one growing season, whereas deciduous plants shed all or nearly all their foliage each year.

Deciduous trees can be planted now, but hold off on evergreens until spring.
If you need a new lawn, seed or sod grows well in fall. It needs to be put down at least 60 days before you expect the ground to freeze.

In the low desert and other hot areas, feed citrus, avocado, and deciduous trees now. In cooler coastal or higher zones, wait until next month.
Late this month or early next, if desired, apply a pre-emergent weed killer to beds and borders.

Different varieties  of trees, whether fruit or decorative, deciduous or evergreen, have different textures - a result of the size and distribution of their leaves.
