Dehydration is a common problem when snowless winters occur. A layer of mulch several inches thick helps retain soil moisture. This mulch should be coarse and loose to permit air movement to roots.

 


Signs of dehydration and overwatering
Stem and leaf wilt signal dehydration, but you should avoid waiting for this sign. In addition, the soil mixture may pull away from the side of the pot.

Desiccation - Dehydration or loss of water.
Dormant - A state of rest and reduced metabolic activity in which plant tissues remain alive but do not grow.

Look for a good root system and protect the roots from injury, dehydration, freezing, overheating and pests. If the roots are dry, soak them in water for a day before planting. You should plant your tree sometime between late fall and early spring.

The reason these species don't perish from dehydration is due to a high oil content within the stem and leaf. These oils are aromatic, quickly evaporating into the air, releasing the scent.

cutin (1) A waxy substance on plant surfaces that tends to make the surface waterproof and can protect leaves from dehydration and disease. (2) A waxy substance on an insect's cuticle that protects the insect from dehydration.

Geranium leaves with yellow edges or yellow tipped leaves on geraniums are usually attributed to a lack of water or dehydration. While geraniums are drought tolerant, they do need some water.

Under ideal conditions, chemical baits, containing metaldehyde, can be somewhat effective because this aldehyde paralyzes the slugs and they eventually die from dehydration.

by a generous layer of mulch placed over the root zones will protect perennials and shrubs from cycles of soil freezing and thawing, which can heave the plants out of the ground, leaving the roots exposed and vulnerable to freezing and dehydration.

In dry climates, such as Colorado, as much as 95 percent of the winter plant loss is due to dehydration.

The sharp surfaces cut through the insect cuticle and the insect dies of dehydration. Diatomaceous earth kills earwigs, ants and box elder bugs.

Roots too can be damaged by the wind as it dries and freezes the soil, which again causes more dehydration. If the soil is frozen solid for longer than four to five days, the roots of the plants cannot replace the lost moisture.

If you notice the white sheen that covers them after refrigerating them, it's harmless. Caused by dehydration and getting handled rough during processing hurts the skin and allows moisture to escape drying them out.

Wind protection prevents the breakage of brittle fronds and reduces dehydration.

Reduce traffic on the lawn at all times if possible, but especially during the heat of the day when foot traffic and even lawn mowers can injure the grass plants and cause almost immediate dehydration.
