Deutzia

Gardening DetritusDiadelphous

The first favorite is Deutzia 'Chardonnay Pearls'. Chardonnay for its soft lime-yellow foliage. Pearls for the white, bead-like buds that open to star shaped flowers in spring. A compact, colorful accent for both borders and containers.

Slender Deutzia
Slender deutzia (Deutzia gracilis 'Nikko') is a low-growing shrub that will take about 10 years to reach a height of 2 feet and a spread of 5 feet.

Deutzia is an easily grown shrub, pleasing for the many small flowers in spring.

Slender deutzia (Deutzia gracilis) 'Chardonnay Pearls'. In spring the plant is covered with a multitude of beautiful white buds that pop open to emit a delicate fragrance.

Other old-fashioned favorites include forsythia, mockorange and fuzzy deutzia. Forsythia (Forsythia Ã-intermedia) produces what my uncle used to call 'screamin' yeller' flowers in early spring.

Cornus florida (Flowering dogwood)
Deutzia gracilis (Slender deutzia)
Ligustrum vulgare (Common privet)
Paithenocissus tricuspidata (Boston ivy)
Rosa multiflora (Japanese rose)
Taxus cuspidata (Japanese yew) ...

One of the most startling combinations I can remember, from a garden I saw 30 years ago, was slender deutzia (Deutzia gracilis) blooming white above the white-edged "Thomas Hogg' hosta at the edge of a waterlily and fish pool.

Forsythia - brilliant yellow flowers in spring
Berberis - dense, thorny and tough hedge, with flowers in spring and berries in autumn
Deutzia - ornamental white or pink flowers
Lavender- fragrant low borders
Fuchsia - choose upright, hardy varieties ...

Use them to thin shrubs such as dogwood, forsythia, lilac, Deutzia, and mock orange in spring; to perform maintenance pruning in summer on shrubs such as Potentilla and Spiraea; and to trim woody perennials, roses, and flowers.

Some examples of plants that produce on previous year's growth include some clematis and hydrangea species; raspberries; forsythia; honeysuckle; flowering quince; wisteria; althaea (Rose of Sharon); bridal-wreath spiraea, deutzia; lilac; ...

Shrubs include: white azaleas, white flowering forms of butterfly bush or buddleia, mock orange, white Clethra, Idea, 'Annabelle' hydrangea, oakleaf hydrangea, deutzia, gardenia (also highly fragrant), pearlbush-Exochorda, spiraea, viburnum, ...
