Direct seeding or direct sowing just means that you start plant seeds in the garden, rather than sowing them earlier, in pots. Many seeds of both flowers and vegetables can be started outdoors, at the start of the growing season.

Easier than transplanting, direct sowing is a great way to get leafy greens started. The ground is already nice and warm, so things germinate quickly and easily.

You can also do a series of direct sowings. Make sure that you're sowing seed or planting started plants at the proper time: For example, if you delay planting wallflowers until the weather is hot, they'll bloom for only a short time (or not at all); ...

But wherever lettuce is planted, the soil should be properly conditioned before direct sowing or transplanting, because there is little time to change it after growth is underway.

This may also be accomplished by planting lupine seeds in the fall and letting Mother Nature do the chilling through the winter. Direct sowing of lupine seeds in autumn is perhaps the easiest method.

They can be directly seeded into your flower garden, or seeded indoors for transplanting later. Direct sowing seeds outdoors should be done after the soil has begun to warm in the spring. Alyssum do not like frost.

Start from seed (preferred) or seedling. Due to its sensitive tap root, cilantro does best with direct sowing into the garden, however, if you’re very careful, it is possible to start them early and transplant later.

While you can grow a fine crop of kohlrabi by direct sowing, I prefer to set out young seedlings started indoors from seed no more than 5 to 6 weeks before the last expected frost date.

Initially it is better to grow established seedlings in a new no-dig garden rather than direct sowing. The best plants to use are potatoes and the shallow rooted plants like brassica's, lettuces and cucurbits. and even some annuals and perennials.
