A dish garden is any container that is packed with a number of plants and usually lacks a drainage hole. The container can be anything from a coffee mug to an old bucket.

Dish gardens have an irresistible appeal - no matter how small they are.

Dish gardens are also captivating; a mix of small plants in one shallow container can recreate a desert scene on a small scale. The best choices for these containers are slow-growing succulents.

Start by using a large shallow bowl filled with premoistened cactus potting soil that contains a 50 percent combination of pumice and perlite for good drainage.

Plant your radish garden in a shady, moist location. Growing radish plants works best in a spot that has been prepared with a fertilizer, compost, or well-rotted manure in the previous season (or for a previous crop).

If you don't have room for a large tub garden, a small dish garden stocked with marginal aquatics may be perfect for you. Just about any container can be used. If you decide to use a ceramic container, it will have to be sealed first.
