Disinfecting
Many people overlook the step of disinfecting their garden box planters, but it's important. Sure, you're just going to be filling it with soil anyway, so it probably doesn't seem necessary to make sure it's clean, but it is.

 


Disinfect your pruning tool between plants - and between cuts on the same plant if a disease is present. Good disinfectants to use include Lysol, Listerine (full-strength) or a 70-99 percent rubbing alcohol.

Disinfect pruners before using them on other plants as you remove spent blooms and foliage throughout the garden.
Don't put any diseased plants into your compost pile.
Amend soil where there are bare spots or where you've removed annuals.

Emergency Disinfectant
lemon juice can disinfect minor wounds or lesions in the mouth and throat. (such as cankor sores)
Apply diluted juice to affected areas or gargle several times a day.

Clean and disinfect trowels, rakes, hoes and sprinklers before packing them. Mix one part household bleach to three parts water, then leave these tools to soak in the solution for one hour. Rinse and dry them thoroughly before packing.

Empty, clean, disinfect and bring in containers. You can store the soil elsewhere, if you plan to reuse it. An easy way to disinfect containers is by spraying them with a bleach cleaner.

Cleaning and disinfecting
Before cleaning the inside, remove all the plants, turn off the electricity and protect any sockets with clear plastic. Clean out all the pots, boxes and trays, and scrub containers before storage or re-use.

During pruning activities, all cutting tools should be disinfected after each cut to prevent the spread of bacteria (use denatured alcohol or 10% bleach).

Next, wipe each gourd again, this time with a soft rag soaked in disinfectant solution, Finally, spread them on newspapers in a warm but dark place for 3 or 4 weeks, or maybe more, if the gourds are particularly large and fleshy.

Dissolvers work much the same way as the flush disinfectants you hook inside a toilet. A dissolvable bar of fertilizer is loaded into a dissolver that is attached to your water source or attached just before your filter.

Start out with a clean system by properly disinfecting trays, rafts, beds and troughs. Effective chemical disinfectants include strong solutions of chlorine bleach or commercial grade hydrogen peroxide based-products.

Incorporating broccoli residues into the soil can help disinfect your soil of the fungus that causes Verticillium wilt. In areas with abundant sunlight, you can solarize the soil to disinfect it of fungi, bacteria, nematodes, and even weed seeds.

Use rubbing alcohol of 70 percent, 91 percent, or 99 percent concentration. Don't use "Pine Sol" or household bleach to disinfect your tools. Tests show they are highly corrosive to metal.

It is recommended that tools be kept sharp and disinfected with methylated spirits or diluted bleach (1%) after each cut is made. Dry tools before reuse.

Disinfect the trap with bleach after using. Rabies is transmitted by saliva, and you don't necessarily have to be bitten to contract the disease.

Even if you did disinfect your Greenhouse last fall, it wouldn't hurt to do it again. The best defense against insects, bacteria, fungi and viruses is cleanliness. Remove everything from your Greenhouse and clean the roof and walls inside and out.
